Fire destroyed a building at the Best Western in Clarksville on Sunday.
A witness told WHAS reporters that she and her sister knocked on doors to alert occupants to the fire.
"Originally it wasn't that much smoke at first the fire took over very quickly, very fast," Kim Hussong said. "It had already engulfed the entire building from us running from one end of the building to the opposite end."
Crews from Jeffersonville and New Albany Fire Departments assisted with the fire.
Displaced guests were moved to a newly renovated area of the motel.
“I do know they had an alarm system, or they had smoke alarms in each individual building and room, and we did hear them going off. So this building had some age on it and back. It may have not required codes when it was built,” Clarksville Fire Chief Brandon Skaggs said.
